Who we are

We are a registered Community Interest Company which means that we are a not for profit organisation and are dedicated to improving the lives and benefiting people living and working in the west country. Because we are not for profit any money we make goes back into the organisation. We have three directors including the company founders Tess Stuber and Alexis Bowater.

Tess and Alexis gave up their extremely successful careers in retail management and the media respectively to raise their children. They founded Beach Schools South West to help to change the way children interact with the world around them and how they learn in the natural environment.

Our mission statement is to give every child in the west country access to curriculum-based learning on the shoreline.

Our dedicated team of practitioners are all fully qualified, Archimedes-trained, Beach Schools practitioners. They are also all DBS checked, as are all of our volunteers. We work closely with Archimedes who are the only Beach Schools trainers in the UK. Their transformative, pedagogical philosophy is inspirational and we believe, like them, that even one day on the beach can irreversibly change a child’s life for the better.

We cover insurance for clients once they are on the beach and all of our staff have personal insurance too. We carry out risk assessments on every site before we embark on a session and we also put together bespoke lesson plans with each school if requested.

What people say about us! pagetitle

“Learning outside of the classroom and connecting with the local environment greatly benefits children’s learning and complements the work that they do in school. Research carried out by ourselves and partners in the south west currently is adding to the mounting evidence of the health and well-being benefits of engaging with the marine environment. From reducing stress and improving concentration to helping children with ADHD and other learning difficulties, there are potentially no limits to the power of a prescription of “a bit of sea time”.
“Beach Schools children will be our coastline’s biggest advocates and protectors in the future, they will be passionate and not only that will seek out this wonderful place of wildness to seek their solace and to sooth their own souls and spirits as they will be able to recreate fond memories of well-being and relationship and affection.” Sarah Blackwell, Archimedes Training
